Welcome to Amiyah King | YourAfterwords
I've always been curious about the world—not simply how it works, but why it works the way it does. Growing up, I found myself noticing the gaps others often overlooked: who was left out of the conversation, whose stories went untold, and how systems meant to serve people could sometimes deepen inequity instead. Long before I knew the language of public health, advocacy, or systems change, I knew I wanted to spend my life asking better questions and helping create better answers.
Writing became my first form of advocacy. It gave me a way to make sense of what I was witnessing and a way to speak up for myself and others. As I began sharing my own experiences through essays, public speaking, and storytelling, something unexpected happened—I found community. The more honestly I told my story, the more people trusted me with theirs. I realized that stories have the power to bridge differences, shift perspectives, and inspire collective action.
That understanding has shaped every chapter of my career. Whether leading initiatives in nonprofit organizations, developing violence prevention strategies in local government, designing community-centered programs, or partnering with organizations to strengthen their impact, I've always seen storytelling as more than communication—it's a tool for justice. Behind every policy, every data point, and every strategic plan are real people whose lives deserve to be understood, honored, and remembered.
My journey into deathcare made that belief even more personal.
When my father died unexpectedly at the age of 40, I was left with the weight of everything that came after—the unanswered questions, the grief, and the realization that so much of his story had gone untold. I often wonder what he would have shared if he had been given more time, more space, or simply the invitation to be heard. His absence transformed the way I think about legacy.
Today, through Your Afterwords, I honor his life by helping others do the one thing he never had the opportunity to do: tell their story. Whether I'm working alongside communities, consulting with organizations, writing about justice and grief, or supporting individuals at the end of life, my work is rooted in the same belief that first inspired me as a young girl: every person deserves to be seen, every story deserves to be heard, and what we leave behind has the power to shape what comes next.
